Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.
See if there is any offensive way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.
If you look up Psalm 139 in your bible, the title will be something like “The All-Knowing, Ever-Present God.” In fact, the first twelve verses are the psalmist’s passionate declarations about the Omniscience and Omnipresence of God. It may appear strange, then, that the song concludes with an invitation for God to do what He has just been praised for already doing.
But the way King David, a man after God’s own heart, ends this Psalm reiterates something wonderful about the character of God. Yes, God is ever-present, but He longs to be present with us in our “concerns.” Yes, He is all-knowing, but He desires for us to know Him. And the end result is clear: that He may lead us in the “everlasting way.”
Believer, you serve a life-giving, universe-creating God who is pleased and glorified when you engage in active relationship with Him.
Though He has known you from the moment He began to knit you together in your mother’s womb, you can follow the example of David and know Him still deeper. Invite Him to search your heart afresh today. Share with Him your concerns, your joy, your fear, as a child speaking to a loving father, and He will lead you in an everlasting way.
