“Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
How are we to reconcile an eternal perspective with these words from Jesus? It seems like if we were truly meant to stop worrying about tomorrow, then surely forever would be well outside our scope. But this passage emphasizes exactly why it is essential to keep eternity at the very front of our minds.
This verse comes right in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, and in this segment, Jesus is addressing every-day anxieties. And the concerns he brings up, food and clothing, are valid ones. They are necessities and it feels natural to fret about these things. But then, Jesus reminds us of two important truths about God.
First, He is the creator and sustainer of everything. He made the world, saw that it was good, and even in its fallen state, He continues to water and feed every plant and animal year in and year out. And second, God loves you infinitely more. Of all His good creation, we are the ones who are meant to last forever.
This is why Jesus calls us to abandon worry and seek the Kingdom of God above all else, because if we can trust Him with our eternity, then certainly we can trust Him to sustain us until we get there.
Believer, The Lord knows your needs and He loves you more than you can fathom. Trust Him, as a child trusts a good father, and He will care for you today, tomorrow, and forever.
