Each of the four living creatures had six wings; they were covered with eyes around and inside. Day and night they never stop, saying,
Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God, the Almighty,
who was, who is, and who is to come.
How do you feel about hymns? I grew up in church in the 90’s, and always felt like they were stuffy compared to the smooth, alt-rock Christian music of the day. It wasn’t long, though, before I grew to have a special appreciation for hymns. It is not only the theologically rich lyrics and congregational tunes I came to enjoy – although I certainly do – but that by singing hymns, I could participate in worship with generations of believers who came before.
But there is only hymn that stands above the others in my esteem: “Holy, Holy, Holy.”
The book of Revelation is full of astounding imagery, and in chapter four, John describes the throne room. Unfathomable beings leading an unending chorus of praise in the very presence of God. The sound echoing throughout the halls of heaven, spurring saints and angels to worship. The magnificence causing the elders to fall down before the LORD, cast their crowns at His feet, and proclaim His worth!
When we sing the words “Holy, Holy, Holy,” this is the scene we enter. We join an ongoing and eternal act of worship happening right now in Heaven!
So regardless of your feelings toward hymns, I invite you to consider this one afresh today, and join your brothers and sisters and the heavenly beings in worship of our eternal King, today and forever.
